The Science Behind Our Work

The moving body is a symphony of bones, muscles, nerves, ligaments and connective tissue referred to as the neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) system. Physical therapy incorporates a variety of approaches to restore optimal function to the NMS system. The principles of biomechanics, exercise, nerve, and muscle physiology are the basis for this unique and valuable health care discipline. Postural awareness and balance integration, muscle re-education, strength and flexibility training are emphasized.

“Utilizing hands-on physical therapy allows our therapists to identify and focus on the underlying cause of the problem rather than on symptoms.”

Our therapists approach the restoration of function from a unique perspective. They are interested in why a muscle isn’t functioning properly and view exercise not as the driving mode of recovery, but as a complement to manual therapy. We combine manual therapy with established exercise protocols to reduce pain, improve function and increase our patient’s ability to manage their problems independently.

This hands-on approach requiring highly skilled practitioners is the foundation of our treatment. Nevertheless, for pain reduction our therapists may prescribe ultrasound, electrical stimulation, iontophoresis, traction, ice and/or moist heat applications.
