Ways to Avoid Injuries Caused by Working from Home

Working from home has become the new normal as more and more businesses transition to online work portals. Though people are working from the comfort of your own home, there are still dangers and risks involved. At Advanced Wellness Centre in Richmond, VA we are here to provide the chiropractic care you need as a result of working from home, but we also want you to be aware of how to avoid these injuries in the first place.

How Injuries Are Caused

While everyone may be working from home, not everyone’s home is equipped for work. The home office has now come to mean the dining room table, the sofa, the countertop, and any other empty place where work can be performed. This has led to spikes in cases of injured or misaligned spines. Hours spent in awkward positions have caused sore wrists, necks, and backs. Laptops are one of the main problems. With a laptop in the wrong position, stress is going to be placed on the discs in the upper back and neck.

Another cause of injuries is repetitive motions. When you have an ergonomic workspace, you are less likely to get these injuries but at home, in less than ideal situations, it is inevitable without intervention.

Avoiding Injuries

If you are on a laptop all day, get a separate external keyboard and a mouse and raise your laptop screen to eye level to avoid the strain. Your feet should rest comfortably on the floor. Lower or raise yourself to the optimal position. One of the best things you can do is get up and move. Spending too much time in the same position is a recipe for trouble. Take mini-breaks and try to get in 30 minutes of good exercise a day, it can be as simple as taking a walk.
