Chiropractic Care for a Herniated Disc

When someone comes in for their first appointment with a chiropractor for a herniated disc, the first step is to go through that person's medical history and perform a thorough physical exam. This includes tests of both neurologic and orthopedic function. The chiropractor is looking for several important components when it comes to the neurological system. These include:

  • Checking to make sure that the reflexes are intact by activating the knees, Achilles, arms, and more.
  • Testing the various muscles to determine even muscle strength on both sides of the spine in all major muscle groups.
  • Measuring someone's sensations for major areas of numbness or tingling.

These tests evaluate the different nerves as they exit the spine. The chiropractor might also order imaging of the spine such as an x-ray or an MRI to evaluate the back further. Remember that regardless of the location of the back pain, the doctor is going to want to take a look at the entire spine. This means evaluating the neck down to the pelvis.

There are some situations where the patient isn’t a good candidate for treatment with a chiropractor. These include people who have something called cauda equina syndrome. This causes problems of the bowel and bladder and is considered a medical emergency. This requires evaluation by a neurosurgeon or an orthopedic surgeon.

In most cases, a trained chiropractor can help a patient diagnosed with a herniated disc.
